Everyone loves to snack.
Let's not kid ourselves.
Let's not kid ourselves.
However, not everyone benefits from the mid-afternoon munchies.
If you are someone who eats breakfast and cannot go until lunch, or eats lunch and cannot go until dinner without something to chew on, I may be able to help :)
Here is a list of healthy snack foods that will leave you completely satisfied without risking those extra calories. And remember, it is perfectly okay to snack, you just need to do it the right way!
Craving salty
Small can of V8
1 Laughing Cow light cheese wedge
1 oz buffalo mozzarella w/ 1/2 cup cherry or grape tomatoes
1/4 cup hummus, carrot or red pepper to dip
1 cup unshelled edamame
1 oz choice nuts: almonds, walnuts, pistachios, peanuts
1 cup homemade popcorn, sprinkle of salt and pepper
1/2 cup Organic salsa, handful of multigrain tortilla chips
Handful whole wheat pretzel sticks, 1 tablespoon mustard
Handful of olives
1/2 cup chickpeas with teaspoon of hotsauce (thanks danni)
Craving Sweet
1/2 cup cinnamon Puffins
1/2 cup Multigrain Cheerios
1/2 cup oatmeal, sprinkle of brown sugar
1 banana with tablespoon organic peanut butter
1 cup fresh fruit
1 cup low sugar (NOT low fat!) yogurt
1/4 cup low fat granola
1 apple sliced, 1 tablespoon honey drizzled
1 cup low-fat cottage cheese with fresh pineapple chunks
Organic peanut butter and fresh jam sandwich with 1 slice of multigrain bread
Tips
- Avoid foods with a high sugar content; that is the biggest contributor to weight gain!
- Make sure your snacks are fresh and will expire in a short period of time; eating foods that can last forever means that they have a ton of preservatives in them, bad news!
- Start with a very small portion and eat slow; that way, you will give your body time to digest and catch up to feeling full.
- Multigrain, multigrain, multigrain....cut out all white foods asap, no health benefits!
- Incorporate calcium once a day, a cup of skim milk or low sugar yogurt promotes weight loss and a flat belly!
- Lastly, get off the couch! Snack while on the move, you'll burn off most of what you're eating anyway!
