11) The Barr Brothers – The Barr Brothers (2010)
I have to give Hidden Track all the credit for alerting me to this album, which, besides Brothers, is my favorite album of the year. I ordered this album from the website below, and it was delivered to me from an orthodontist’s office in Providence (weird I know). It doesn’t matter though because it is awesome. All I know about these guys is that they were originally members of The Slip, of which I’ve never heard a song. I actually haven’t looked much more up about these guys, because the mystery kind of adds to the allure, and this continues to be one of my absolute favorite albums. This under the radar, folk, roots rock album is dark, yet incredibly gripping to listen to. See “Beggar in the Morning” and “Give the Devil Back His Heart.”
12) The Greyboy Allstars – What Happened to Television? (2007)
I actually have no recollection as to where or how I heard of this group, but who cares. This San Diego funk and jazz group has given me countless hours of smiles. This isn’t my first experience with the group, as I’ve been pretty familiar with saxaphonist/flutist Karl Denson’s work since I was a lot younger. Regardless, if you’re a fan of jazz, funk, or anything similar to the group Soulive, I highly recommend you check these guys out.
13) Jackson Brown & David Lindley – Love is Strange (2010)
Since I was very little my parents have always been playing Jackson Browne on our family stereo. In fact, Jackson Browne is my mom’s favorite artist. I swear every time I go home she’s got him on the stereo while she’s doing something around the house. If this were seven years ago, I would kick my own ass for putting him on this list. Lately though, I’ve really grown to enjoy his music. I now listen to his Solo Acoustic albums regularly, and add to that atmosphere the multi-instrumental genius of David Lindley and I cannot stay away. This album, comprised of live recordings from concerts Browne and Lindley gave in Spain, provides incredibly beautiful tracks, full of Browne’s clear, emotive voice and Lindley’s impressive string work. My favorites include “Your Bright Baby Blue,” “El Rayo X,” and “Mercury Blues.”
